Miss Pole (Imelda Staunton) is absolutely hilarious in this clip from Cranford. "This is no occasion for small talk. There is lace at stake!" and "That cow is like a daughter to me", and "Stop at once. There are some ladies running!" The poor kitty cat! What a case of the sharts. (See www.urbandictionary.com)

Did Gaskell include this scene in the novel? It seems quite vulgar compared to her peer Dickens. The closest he came was with the word “noisome.”
