Snoop through my DVD library!

Welcome to my world friends!  Knowing how much I like to snoop in other people's cupboards, bookshelves and DVDs, I thought I should open my cupboards to you.  I will blog about each of these piles separately, but I thought I would let you see the whole thing here first.  I will link each pile to it's Amazon listing, so you can find out more about them if anything interests you.  Feel free to laugh at my taste in film.  I have been shaking my head all morning!

Very funny to see the juxtaposition of films like The Buccaneers with Revenge of the Nerds and A Christmas Story, but there you have it.  Not all of the DVDs in the house are here, but most of them are.  I did not include most of my teenage boys films like Dude, Where's my Car? and Zoolander (although I did enjoy Zoolander) and probably a few of mine aren't here, but I didn't scour the house.  I tried not to edit them, and some of the fun is seeing which ones got grouped together (usually watched at a similar time).
Please do comment and I hope you learned something about your blogger today.
Hah! I just realized I have 2 copies of The Duchess!  Anyone want a copy?

  1. I love Dick Van Dyke. He recently did an interview on NPR where he said that those five seasons were the best years of his acting career. And Foyle's War. I wish it had gone on and on and on.

  2. Hi Mary,
We watched The Dick Van Dyke Show with our teen boys and they thought it was hilarious. And it was even better than we remembered. He is a genius! And Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks were brilliant in Foyle's war.

  5. Great list Kate! Thanks for letting me peek into your DVD library. You have just given me ideas for a few more blog posts. For instance, I haven't watched Our Mutual Friend in a while. I loved it but only saw it once, so I think it's time again.

I see you like some of the great old Black and White films too. They are very fun! And I haven't seen Brothers and Sisters. Is that series good?

  6. @Jenny-I'm very pleased you like my DVD library! I love Our Mutual Friend! I find Brothers and Sisters very addictive and fun. I really love old Black and White films because the actors were fantastic and as I was growing up I found out my Grandma loved all the Black and White films I do as well as the musicals, which I find comforting although sad at times because she is not here to watch them with me.

    Also love:
    Adam's Rib
    Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
    To Sir With Love
    To Kill A Mockingbird
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House
    Harvey
    High Society

  7. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House! I love that one! The scene where she is picking the paint colours is pure genius.

Muriel Blandings: I want it to be a soft green, not as blue-green as a robin's egg, but not as yellow-green as daffodil buds. Now, the only sample I could get is a little too yellow, but don't let whoever does it go to the other extreme and get it too blue. It should just be a sort of grayish-yellow-green. Now, the dining room. I'd like yellow. Not just yellow; a very gay yellow. Something bright and sunshine-y. I tell you, Mr. PeDelford, if you'll send one of your men to the grocer for a pound of their best butter, and match that exactly, you can't go wrong! Now, this is the paper we're going to use in the hall. It's flowered, but I don't want the ceiling to match any of the colors of the flowers. There's some little dots in the background, and it's these dots I want you to match. Not the little greenish dot near the hollyhock leaf, but the little bluish dot between the rosebud and the delphinium blossom. Is that clear? Now the kitchen is to be white. Not a cold, antiseptic hospital white. A little warmer, but still, not to suggest any other color but white. Now for the powder room - in here - I want you to match this thread, and don't lose it. It's the only spool I have and I had an awful time finding it! As you can see, it's practically an apple red. Somewhere between a healthy winesap and an unripened Jonathan. Oh, excuse me...
Mr. PeDelford: You got that Charlie?
Charlie, Painter: Red, green, blue, yellow, white.
    Mr. PeDelford: Check.

  8. I love that quote. As you know I love the film Top Hat! so on Thursday 1st December 2011 I am going to the Leeds Grand Theatre with my Mum to see Tom Chambers and Summer Strallen star in Irving Berlin's Top Hat which is based on RKO's Motion Picture. It is Fred and Ginger's greatest Hollywood dance musical - live on stage for the very first time in 76 years!

It is also Black Tie and Tiara Night for one night only on the 1st December so I can wear my ball gown!

This is one of my favourite musicals so I can't wait to see it live on stage!

  9. I hope you had fun Kate. Sounds like a wonderful show, and great to dress up too. I saw Ginger Rogers at Radio City Music Hall in NYC when I was a teen. She must have been in her 60s or older then, but she was still dancing with the Rockettes!

Did you wear a tiara too?

Did I tell you that my great-grandmother was born in Leeds? Hunslet to be precise.

  10. @Jenny - Top Hat was brilliant last night at the Leeds Grand Theatre! Tom Chambers and Summer Strallen were fantastic as Jerry Travers and Dale Tremont! The rest of the cast were great too. They sang some of Irving Berlin’s greatest hits, such as, 'Cheek to Cheek' and 'Top Hat', 'White Tie and Tails', 'The Piccolino', 'No Strings' (I'm Fancy Free) and 'Isn't This A Lovely Day To Be Caught In The Rain?' which are all in the film Top Hat. They also sang 'Let’s Face the Music and Dance' and 'I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket' which are from the film 'Follow The Fleet.'

The costumes, sets and dance routines were all wonderful and I loved every minute of it! I want to see it all over again! I had a lovely time and I felt very special in my ball gown! I didn't wear a tiara but I did have my hair up.

How wonderful to have seen Ginger Rogers! She was fantastic at dancing! I think she was 83 when she died, although I'm not sure.

No, you didn't tell me your great-grandmother was born in Leeds. I felt a little sad thinking of my Grandma (my Mum's Mum) last night as she would have loved to have seen Top Hat on stage. She loved all the old films that I love.

  11. I just looked up where Guiseley is. You are in Calendar Girls territory (almost). I looked on my family tree and found my great-great-great-grandfather was born in Otley. That is close to you isn't it? I had to go back 200 years, but still...

Glad you had a great time. I bet you looked lovely. I did the math and Ginger Rogers would have been 68 when I saw her at Radio City Music Hall in 1979. Oh, that does make me sound old! She was still dancing pretty well for a 68 year old!

  12. @Jenny - Yes, Otley is about 10 minutes away from Guiseley and so is Ilkley which is a lovey town. I loved wearing my ball gown and seeing 'Top Hat' on stage, it was fantasic! I would love to see it again but it's fully booked and only on until the 10th December. We booked our tickets in June.

I love all the Fred and Ginger musicals and the era. The style and the clothes are wonderful.
