As Time Goes By with Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer |
This is one of my favourite TV shows ever. I can watch this anytime even if I have seen the episode a few times before. I just stumbled upon one I had never seen last night (PBS is still running them on Monday night where I live). It just makes me smile!

Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer- As Time Goes By |
For anyone who has never seen this show, Lionel (Geoffrey Palmer) and Jean (Judi Dench) were lovers many years ago during the Korean
War. They are separated by a misunderstanding but meet again by chance
when Lionel needs a secretary from Jean's firm to help with his book "My Life in Kenya". He takes her daughter,
Judith, out on a date and discovers she is Jean's daughter. The two
reunite and fall back in love.
|
Alistair and Lionel- As Time Goes By |
If you are a fan, you know that half the fun of this show is the witty banter between Lionel and Jean and the rest comes from interactions with the rest of the regular cast. Philip Bretherton plays Alistair Deacon, Lionel's smooth talking book publisher who is constantly annoying everyone, especially "Li".
|
Moira Brooker as Judith |
Moira Brooker plays Jean's daughter Judith. She is twice divorced and always on the lookout for a good man. She doesn't work too hard at the office possibly due to the fact that the boss is her mum.
|
Jenny Funnel as Sandy |
Sandy lives with Lionel, Jean and Judith by about the second season. She is like another daughter to Jean and keeps the office running like a top. She is also on the lookout for a man and we see her dating a variety of "interesting" characters.

As Time Goes By Reunion Special |
This wonderful series ran from 1992 all the way to 2008, the later episodes being reunion specials. We follow our main 5 characters, plus Madge and Rocky, Penny and Stephen, Mrs. Bale the housekeeper at the country house and Lol Ferris the gardener. Funnily enough, Tim Wilton who plays Lol Ferris is Mr.
Gardener from Pride and Prejudice 1995.

Jean and Lionel- As Time Goes By |
So if you have never seen this show, you now know enough to pick up at any episode and enjoy it. A pot of tea every Monday night and a cuddle on the couch for me! Ahhhhh!
P.S. If you love this show too, please comment below with your fave episode, character or line from the show.
I don't have a favorite episode. They all just get me to chuckle out loud. Sometimes Lionel is so clueless or I think he responds exactly as my husband would. I think the dry wit and sarcasm is perfect. I enjoy Lionel's dad Rocky and his girlfriend Madge - you're never too old to have fun. It's not like there's alot of action and adventure so that could be disappointing for some but for just 1/2 hr of a lifting of the spirits it's great.
ReplyDeleteProbably the best British show ever! I'll never tire of it.
DeleteI like it when the focus is on Jean and Lionel. They have great chemistry. It was a wonderful series. It's always a pleasure to watch two British actors at the top of their game.
ReplyDeleteGlad you both are fans of ATGB too! I love it when Jean fibs or gets nosy and then gets into trouble because of it.
ReplyDeleteLove them all, too, but really loved the episodes after Rocky gives Lionel the country home. They are acceptable 'townies'....KBM!
ReplyDeleteLoved this show too!

One of my all-time favorite shows ever--funny, charming, sweet, warm, and tender. My husband is a fan too and we own the whole series and watch it end to end every couple of years.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post and great photos--made me smile!
Love this series too! It always makes me laugh. Lionel is so funny with his cranky demeanor and custard tarts but he's lovable too! And Jean is wonderful! Must watch it again. :)
ReplyDeleteI just love every single time that Jean tells a lie. She seems to be driven to do so by a strange force and simply can't help it. Also Lionel's sense of humor and Alister's remarks. Best show ever. Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer had an extraordinary chemistry, which is rarely seen these days.
ReplyDeleteHi Paola. You are right about Jean's lying. Hilarious. I just watched an episode tonight as our local PBS station has had it on at 7:30 on Mondays for years I think. I rarely one I haven't already seen, but I never mind a repeat!
DeleteCheers!
I've just caught Judy & Alistair's wedding- a surprise episode I'd forgotten I've never seen- I'm thrilled whenever I catch a missed episode, will usually forgo pedestrian television to catch this fabulous cast at their best.
ReplyDeleteNice little site, thanks for starting this thread!

I have been watching television shows since "I Love Lucy", and this one is my favorite of all time. Dame Judy Dench and Geoffrey Palmer are a class act, and "As Time Goes By" is the best written comedy series I've ever watched. Wish the show was still in production.

ReplyDeleteI have seen every single episode at least a half a dozen times. Always makes me happy!
ReplyDeleteNot much ever happens. It's an incredibly gentle show. But there were never any television characters I would rather spend time with than these folks if this "Idaho potato farmer" could magically jump into their world. I think I'd stay... a while, A long while!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about this show. It is so cozy. I have it on daily even if just in the background because it is so comforting. I want to be a part of their world. I don't have a favorite episode but I have favorite scenes. I loved the reaction they had when the neighbors with the black eyes walked into the pub... just to name one of many.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the comments & love to revisit this wonderful series
ReplyDeleteThey don't make them like that anymore!!
I still watch it. I love it… I have see all episodes many times
ReplyDeleteI love this show so much that the next time I'm in England I plan to visit all the locations this show was filmed at.
ReplyDeleteThe gorgeous Jenny Funnel is so good in this. Lionel is priceless.
