My fave British (non period) comedies

Four Weddings and a Funeral 1994
Young Bridesmaid: What's bonking?
Scarlett: Well, it's kinda like table tennis, only with slightly smaller balls.

Love Actually 2004
Sam: Let's go get the shit kicked out of us by love.

The Full Monty
Dave: Anti-wrinkle cream there may be, but anti-fat-bastard cream there is not.

A Fish Called Wanda 1988
Ken: Rev-enge!
Otto: [laughing] It's K-K-K-Ken! C-c-c-coming to k-k-k-kill me! How you gonna c-c-c-catch me, K-K-K-Ken?

Calendar Girls 2003
Chris: Lawrence, we're going to need considerably bigger buns.

Educating Rita 1983
Rita: Christ! My customer! She only come in for a demi-wave, she'll come out looking like a flippin' muppet!

Notting Hill 1999
Keziah: No thanks, I'm a fruitarian.
Max: I didn't realize that.
William: And, ahm: what exactly is a fruitarian?
Keziah: We believe that fruits and vegetables have feeling so we think cooking is cruel. We only eat things that have actually fallen off a tree or bush - that are, in fact, dead already.
William: Right. Right. Interesting stuff. So, these carrots...
Keziah: Have been murdered, yes.
William: Murdered? Poor carrots. How beastly!

Bridget Jones's Diary 2001
Mr. Darcy: I like a woman with an arse you can park a bike in and balance a pint of beer on.

Death at a Funeral 2007 (not 2010!)
Jane: Would you like a cup of tea, Sandra?
Sandra: Tea can do many things, Jane, but it can't bring back the dead.

Kinky Boots 2005

Lauren: Lola, you're gonna have to excuse Charlie. We don't have many transvestites in Northampton.
Lola: I'm not merely a transvestite, sweetheart. I'm also a drag queen. It's a simple equation. A drag queen puts on a frock, looks like Kylie. A transvestite puts on a frock, looks like... Boris Yeltsin in lipstick. There, I said it.

About a Boy 2002
Marcus: Suddenly I realized - two people isn't enough. You need backup. If you're only two people, and someone drops off the edge, then you're on your own. Two isn't a large enough number. You need three at least.

Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked) 2009
Dave: So tell us Mark, now at the very end - what was your secret? How did you get all them girls?
Mark: Simple. Don't say anything at all.
'Young' Carl: Nothing?
Mark: Nothing. Then, when the tension becomes too much to bear, you finally, finally, you just say: "How about it, then?"

Bend It Like Beckham 2002
Wedding Guest: Lesbian? Her birthday's in March. I thought she was a Pisces.

So, there you have a list of some of my favourite British Comedy Films (not period pieces). I have obviously left a few off of my list which should be there so please help me out and leave a comment with your faves, whether they are on my list or not!

Cheers!

  2. Hi Jj

You have good taste in film! Glad you enjoyed the list. None to add to it?

  3. Most of these I've seen but a few I haven't! Adding them to Netflix immediately. A few on my list - Beautiful Creatures with Rachel Weisz and Susan Lynch. It's a dark comedy but I love it! The Englishman Who Went up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain. And Truly Madly Deeply with the divine Alan Rickman...

  4. Dear Jenny:

Ahhhh - looking at your list, I can really tell that we're sisters! Although I have missed seeing a couple of your choices (namely, Death at a Funeral and Kinky Boots) - must see them immediately. And I certainly second Mel Mel's choice of Truly Madly Deeply although I am completely confounded as to why it has never come out on DVD (insert gobsmacked face here!) - I just checked on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com and there are no Region 1 DVDs available, and even new Region 2 DVDs cost upwards of $130! As the kids would say, WTF! Time to slap in the old VHS copy for another viewing ...
I'll see if I can think of any more (but I'm at work now, and I need to look at my DVD collection to spark my memory).
    Love,
    Big Sister

  5. I have at least half of these movies, if not more. I saw "Death At A Funeral" in the theater when it was released and loved it. When the American version came out, I immediately ordered the original in my own sort of protest. "Four Weddings and A Funeral" was the first movie I ever went to on my first date night ever. Yes, a lot of these movies hold specific memories, which make them even bigger favorites for me. Great list.

  6. @Melmel-I will have to check out Beautiful Creatures. I just checked it out on IMDb and Rachel Weisz is a platinum blonde in it! Sounds like a fun one. Love the other two!

@Bigsister-I know that TMD is your fave of faves. I can't believe that it is not available in DVD either! Crazy!

@ladytoesocks-so glad you are another fan of Death at a Funeral. I will never see the American version either (shudder). Really cute that Matthew Macfadyen and Keeley Hawes played spouses in this as they are married in real life. And you have always had good taste in film if you went to 4W&aF on your very first date. High five! I remember taking a guy to see Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie in the late 70s. He never asked me out again as I think it wasn't quite his taste. LOL!

  7. Do you have a thing for Hugh Grant? :) He's in 5 of the movies you've listed! I loved Notting Hill and About a Boy!
Ones to add to your list? What about Shirley Valentine, Saving Grace, Pink Panther or Waking Ned Devine (although Ned is an Irish film)?

  8. Oh and what about Morris: A Life with Bells On? One that I'd like to see!

  9. @Charleybrown-Hi Cheryl! LOL about Hugh Grant. I do enjoy him in these films, but I wouldn't consider myself a Hugh Grant fan specifically. It does look suspicious however doesn't it?

I love your additions to my list, and I want to see Morris:A life with Bells On too. I think I need a region 2 DVD player!
