Downton Abbey- Season 2 airs in the UK Sept 18

Downton Abbey Season 2
OK now I'm trying not to get too excited about Downton Abbey starting again on Sunday because I DON'T LIVE IN ENGLAND!!!!!!  This is not for lack of trying to find a way to spend at least part of the year in a cottage in England (my totally unrealistic dream). But alas, I have to remain in Canada because this is where my house and my job are located. Dang! (Oops, I guess my family are here too!) So there is no ITV for me at present.

Matthew Crawley looks so sad going off to war
I have purposely avoided all the hype online up until now because I thought I would just be torturing myself with agonized waiting until it arrives on PBS in January. The internet has made it much harder for those of us lacking in patience. But then I had a thought...

Oooohh...officers!
Perhaps there are some really nice tech savvy people who actually live in the UK. And perhaps they might upload this to YouTube for those of us stuck on this side of the pond. And perhaps I might be able to watch some or all of these before they are yanked off by either ITV or PBS.

Lady Edith, Lady Sybil and Lady Mary Crawley
What do you think? Is it possible? Or should I just wait it out with all of the other Downton fans who will be seeing it in January, just when we need a bit of diversion from the long, dark, cold winter. Hmmmmm.......

Lavinia Swire fiancee of Matthew Crawley
But there will be all of these new characters. Like Lavinia Swire (gotta love that name) who snaps up Matthew Crawley after he and Mary part ways. Matthew has a new fiancee???? Mary must be green with jealousy don't you think?

Maid Ethel
And there is a new maid Ethel who might not be the most hard working of employees. Or the most discreet.

Vera Bates appears
Vera Bates appears just in time to really muck things up for her poor husband John Bates the valet and his love Anna, the head maid. Can't wait to see this storyline.

Good old Carson and William are back
It will be interesting to see how our favourite characters deal with the pressure of war. Parts of this will be hard to watch for anyone who has lost family members in any of the many conflicts of the past century. But I trust Julian Fellowes to handle the subject with sensitivity.

So whether I try to hunt this down online or whether I dutifully wait until I can legally watch it on PBS and on DVD in January, I have high hopes that the second season of Downton Abbey will equal or surpass the first.

And honestly, if I could just hear ONE of those great zingers from Dowager Countess Violet (Maggie Smith) I think I could probably make it to January. Maybe...

P.S. Perhaps one of the books below might help too!

  1. I bet your family will be pleased to learn that they rank behind house and job ;) but at least you mentioned them!

I agree with what you said about avoiding some of the publicity. I've stopped looking at everything that's out there since I want to enjoy it with fresh eyes. I also find the fan base has ballooned since the advent of season 1 when it seemed that I was talking to the wind about it! So now there are more conversations happening (a good thing) but plenty of spoilers to avoid!
Looking forward to spending our Sunday nights at Downton!!

  2. @Cheryl-just jesting about the family of course ;)

However, wouldn't it be fun to be in the UK this Sunday night? Apparently even Wills and Kate are fans and will likely be glued to the screen.

I don't really mind waiting until January but having the Christmas special in the spring just seems wrong. OK, maybe I do mind...

  3. It is a shame we have to wait until January. I do feel bad about that. It's beginning to sound like a night time soap opera however. I hope the costuming etc. makes up for it. smiles

  4. Don't spy on the Christmas gifts under your parents bed; otherwise, Christmas morning will be so very boring.

  5. @Suzan and ladytoesocks-I hope I can wait. I want to be able to wait. It is like Christmas isn't it? Well, thank goodness Santa (ITV, PBS, BBC) keep bringing us these lovely presents. They are so well appreciated by so many of us!

  6. I'm really looking forward to watching the new series because I LOVE Downton Abbey! I am going to watch it with a bar of chocolate and a cup of tea & escape to Downton Abbey for a while. Bliss! I also would like The World of Downton Abbey for Christmas!

  8. @Kate- You lucky duck, you are in England! Please stop by and tell us how you like the first episode. I'll be thinking about you on Sunday night!

@Maria Grazia- Do you get ITV in Italy? Will you be watching it on Sunday or do you have to wait?

  9. It was great. It lived up to the hype, no joke. (Of course, by saying that, I've just raised the bar, right? And so perhaps done readers here a disservice...)

There was -- as I believe Dame Maggie said in the trailer for next week's show -- never a dull moment.

My sister phoned right when it started -- ack! I was setting the timer to record it, so I let it record and talked on the phone, and eventually came back to find that *I'd missed the last two minutes*. Hadn't recorded quiiiiite long enough. And I couldn't make the watch-again video system work at the network's web site. Fortunately the cable company has a Catch Up feature, and I got the last scene. Phew.

It really is worth the wait. Very, very good. Wish I could say something more worthwhile than that, but anything else at all would be a spoiler (in fact, I'm glad I didn't read this post before I saw it, and so didn't know about the new characters before I met them in medias episode).

You have a treat in store --

  10. I gave into temptation today & bought 'The World of Downton Abbey' book! It is lovely! Loved the first episode of the second series - lots of tears & heartache! I can't wait for next week's episode! It's worth the wait Jenny.

  11. @ Mary Ellen- Glad you enjoyed it. I am now quite resigned to waiting. I'm treating as an exercise in delayed gratification! Glad you got to see the end of the episode!

@ Kate- I will take your recommendation and ask for the Downton Abbey book for Christmas. Then I'll be all ready for January. Keep the chocolate and tea coming for Sunday nights!

  12. I'm a Downton Abbey addict! I think I need help! Like Lady Mary, I am in love with Matthew and I really hope he doesn't die or become injured in the war!

Jenny, if you type 'Downton Abbey Season Two episode one' and click on Putlocker you should be able to watch it, if you like.

I love my 'Downton Abbey' book it has different sections about the war, fashion, behind the scenes etc. Lovely photos too!
