I was distracted by Donald Sutherland's teeth as much as by Jenna Malone's breathless way of speaking. Here I must say I didn't really dislike her way of portraying Lydia but I could not warm to her depiction. I also like this Charlotte Lucas and in fact this Collins, having been a fan of Tom Hollander for some time.
And I like Keira Knightley's and Matthew Macfadyen's way of interpreting these two great figures. They had great chemistry and esp. so in the first proposal scene which I enjoyed and didn't believe was too quick. I thought it a most romantic proposal despite the rejection.
And comparing Mrs Bennet’s I have to say Alison Steadman’s high pitched voiced almost made my head ache. Brenda Blethyn is nervy but sweet and it just suited the production very well. This PP is so much a product of our time, the way we might read it today. Who knows how we will read Austen’s PP in 15 more years.

I didn’t like the way they handled how Elizabeth told Darcy and the gardeners of Lydia’s elopement and despite what the director might think I also didn’t like Georgiana’s knowing look at her brother and Elizabeth when she first meets her.

I have to end on a nice note since I truly enjoyed this version, Charlotte and Elizabeth are great together, they seem like real friends, how intimate and heartily the meeting at Rosings was of them. Very sweet.
For me the film could have ended with Darcy’s second confession of love which was so touching that one wants to receive such a thing as well.
RenaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
